Ever flipped a nappy pack over, spotted six eco-sounding words on the back, and thought… right, but which one actually means something?

You're not alone. "Plant-based", "FSC-certified", "organic" — they get printed like confetti. So let's slow down and look at three materials you'll see in the nappy aisle: organic bamboo, wood pulp, and organic cotton. What they are, how they stack up, and why we landed where we did. No lecture. Promise.

Bamboo

Bamboo is technically a grass, and a wildly fast growing one — some species grow close to a metre a day. Harvest it and it regrows from the same root system, no replanting required. Grown organically, it typically needs little water and no synthetic sprays, and it's a genuine carbon-absorber while it grows. High yield, small footprint, quick to bounce back. As nappy cores go, that's a lot to like — which is exactly why ours is made with 74% organic bamboo.

Wood pulp

The long-standing workhorse of the nappy world, and when it's FSC-certified, a responsible one. The honest catch is time: the softwood trees behind wood pulp take 20-plus years to mature, where bamboo's ready in a few. It's a solid, well-understood material — just slower to renew.

Organic cotton

Soft, natural, lovely — and going organic cuts out the synthetic pesticides, which is a real win. The trade-off is thirst: cotton is one of the most water-hungry crops going, even the organic kind, and it yields less fibre per patch of land than bamboo. Beautiful stuff. Just a heavier lift on resources.

So — for renewability, land use and water, bamboo comes out in front. That's why it's at the heart of what we make.

But here's the honest part: the material is only one chapter — how it's processed matters too, and every fibre gets processed somehow. One thing we can control is how. Our bamboo is bleached with hydrogen peroxide instead of chlorine — a gentler, chlorine-free method that breaks down into little more than water and oxygen. Small detail, but details add up.

And no disposable nappy, ours included, is zero-impact or plastic-free. What bamboo does let us do is make a nappy with less harmful materials than a traditional disposable, without giving up the dryness and up-to-12-hours protection your little one actually needs.
Because a better nappy isn't about being perfect. It's about making the good choice the easy one.
